Protected Species Survey

Bird

At Wildfox Ecological Consulting, we offer Bird Protected Species Surveys to assess the presence of nesting or foraging birds on your site. Many bird species, particularly those listed under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017, are legally protected. This means it is an offence to disturb or destroy their nests or harm the birds during the breeding season. If your project could impact bird habitats, it is vital to conduct a Bird Survey to ensure compliance with the law and to plan for any necessary mitigation measures.

Our team of experienced ecologists carries out comprehensive surveys to detect nesting sites, assess bird activity, and identify any protected species. We use a variety of techniques, including visual observations, nest monitoring, and acoustic surveys, to provide a full picture of bird species present on your site. We also conduct winter bird surveys, which are particularly important for identifying wintering bird species that may use your site for roosting, feeding, or sheltering during the colder months.

What’s Included in Our Bird Survey Service?

  • Preliminary Habitat Assessment – We assess the site to identify habitats that may be suitable for nesting or foraging birds, such as woodlands, hedgerows, grasslands, and wetlands. We evaluate the presence of any bird species listed for protection.

  • Field Surveys – Our team carries out visual surveys, including point counts, nesting checks, winter bird surveys, and habitat observations, to detect the presence of bird species and their nests. These surveys typically take place during the bird breeding season (March to August) but also include winter bird surveys to identify species using the site during the colder months (November to February).

  • Ecological Report – A detailed report summarising the findings, including any protected bird species identified, active nests, and potential risks from development activities. The report will also provide mitigation recommendations and any necessary action to avoid disturbance.

  • Mitigation and Licensing Advice – If protected bird species or nests are found, we offer advice on licensing requirements and help you develop mitigation strategies to avoid disturbing nesting birds. This may involve timing restrictions on works or the provision of alternative nesting sites.
