Protected Species Survey

Otter

At Wildfox Ecological Consulting, we provide Otter Protected Species Surveys to assess the presence of otters and their habitats on or near your site. Otters (Lutra lutra) are a European Protected Species (EPS) and are fully protected under the Wildlife and Countryside Act 1981 and the Conservation of Habitats and Species Regulations 2017. It is illegal to capture, disturb, injure, or destroy otters or their breeding and resting places. If your development is near a river, lake, wetland, or watercourse, an otter survey may be required to ensure compliance with environmental legislation.

Our team of experienced ecologists conducts detailed surveys to identify otter holts (dens), resting sites, and foraging areas, using a combination of field surveys and habitat assessments.

What’s Included in Our Otter Survey Service?

  • Preliminary Habitat Assessment – We assess the site for suitable otter habitats, including riverbanks, reed beds, lakes, ponds, and wet woodlands, identifying potential holts and resting places.

  • Field Surveys – Our ecologists conduct detailed field surveys, searching for signs of otters such as footprints, spraints (droppings), feeding remains, slides, and holts. Surveys typically take place year-round, but evidence is often easier to find in spring and autumn.

  • Camera Trapping (if required) – If initial surveys indicate possible otter activity but lack direct evidence, we may deploy remote camera traps to monitor movement and confirm presence.

  • Ecological Report – A comprehensive report summarising our findings, including habitat assessments, signs of otter activity, and any identified resting sites. The report will also include mitigation recommendations and guidance on whether a development licence from Natural England is required.

  • Mitigation and Licensing Advice – If otters are present, we provide expert advice on mitigation, such as buffer zones, habitat enhancement, and timing restrictions to ensure minimal disturbance. If necessary, we can assist with the licensing process to legally proceed with your project.
