Protected Species Survey

Reptile

At Wildfox Ecological Consulting, we offer Reptile Protected Species Surveys to assess the presence and distribution of reptiles on your site. Several species of reptiles, such as the slow worm, grass snake, adder, and common lizard, are protected under UK law, and it is illegal to disturb or harm them. If your project could impact reptile habitats or involve potential disturbances to these species, conducting a Reptile Survey is essential to ensure compliance with wildlife legislation and to plan for appropriate mitigation measures.

Our team of qualified ecologists conducts thorough surveys to detect reptiles, identify suitable habitats, and understand species activity. We use a combination of techniques, including habitat assessments, translocation surveys, and refugia searches, to provide a detailed picture of reptile presence on your site.

What’s Included in Our Reptile Survey Service?

  • Preliminary Habitat Assessment – We begin by assessing the site for suitable reptile habitats, such as scrubland, woodland edges, hedgerows, and grassland areas. We evaluate the quality of these habitats and the potential for reptiles to be present.

  • Field Surveys – Our team conducts a series of visual surveys, including refugia searches, torchlight surveys, and site transects, to identify reptile species. These surveys typically take place during the active season, from March to October, when reptiles are most likely to be active.

  • Ecological Report – A comprehensive report summarising the survey findings, including species identified, the distribution of reptiles across the site, and recommendations for mitigation measures or further action if reptiles are present.

  • Mitigation and Translocation – If reptiles are present, we provide advice on licensing and help design appropriate mitigation strategies. This could involve habitat enhancement, reptile translocation, or timing restrictions to avoid disturbance during key life stages.
